Description
The hearing and vision nurse goes to each daycare and pre-school in Madison County to screen all children ages 3, 4, and 5. If a child fails a screening test, the nurse will return at a future date to re-screen the child. If the child fails the re-screen test, the nurse will refer them back to their physician for further testing.
Madison County Health Department started screenings in the 2001-2002 school year. During that year 2,809 children were screened for vision and 2,871 were screened for hearing. Forty-six children were referred for further testing.
Benefits
The goal of this screening program is to identify hearing and/or vision problems. Early identification of problems and referral to an appropriate health care provider can reduce life-long sensory deficits.
